Looking back on Music Reality Television

I recently watched an episode of A&E’s Cultureshock that took a look back at MTV’s groundbreaking 2002 reality TV series The Osbournes. The Osbournes changed television programming, taking us off the rails of a crazy train with an inside look into a celebrity household with curse words, dog poop, and ham throwing. The show pushed reality television as we know it. As A&E put it, The Osbournes “Closed the gap between celebrity and reality.” The show taught us "learn how to love and forget how to hate," and did so before The Kardashian’s, The Hogan’s, or those tampons from The Jersey Shore. Without the Osbournes we would not have such great music related reality tv shows as Gene Simmons’ Rock School, Vanilla Ice Goes Amish, or Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party. Looking back on The Prince of Darkness Ozzy yelling “Sharon” made me wanna compile a list of my favorite music reality tv shows....

Coach Snoop

Netflix's inside look at Snoop Dogg as a youth football coach. Snoop is no stranger to reality tv with other shows such as Snoop Dogg’s FatherHood

Supergroup

You would think Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach, Jason Bonham, Scott Ian, and Evan Seinfeld all living under one roof together could make some really kick ass music together. Instead they end up arguing like teenage girls which makes for some pretty decent reality tv.

Ice Loves Coco

I wanna put Ice T’s rap school here but I cannot take Coco out of the equation. They are like peas in a pod. Fans adore Coco and the couple have had two reality shows with Ice Loves Coco(2011-2013) and Ice & Coco(2015). Coco also appears in Ice T’s rock band Body Count’s music video “Institutionalized”.

Run’s House

This was hip hop’s Osbournes (or so MTV Thought), an inside look at the family of Run-DMC rapper Joseph Simmons A.K.A Rev Run.

Gone Country

Three seasons of John Rich taking musical celebrities, moving them into a Nashville mansion, and making them compete for a one song deal, made a pretty entertaining show. Bobby Brown should have won the first season though.

Gene Simmon’s Family Jewels

As if KISS condoms were not enough, we get this shit show. As a fan of everything Kiss, I had to watch. Some of my favorite episodes are “Face Off” where Gene and Shannon get face lifts, and of course “The Gene Simmons Roast”

Rock of Love

A house full of trashy woman and Brett Michaels “Ain’t Nothing but a Good Time”

Tommy Lee Goes to College

Who can forget the time Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee attended the University of Nebraska, who can forget the hot tutor, and seeing Tommy struggle in the marching band. Tommy’s best film work is still that video on the boat though.

Flavor of Love

I will never forget where I was that day that girl Somethin pooped on the floor.
